This consultation workshop on June 12 at 1:30 pm CET aims to identify faith-sensitive strategies to reduce intersectional vulnerabilities and prevent and respond to VAWG by drawing on religious and cultural resources of displaced populations.

The workshop will lead to documenting good practices, ideas and recommendations which would be incorporated into the Guidance Note on “Faith sensitive VAWG prevention and response in forced displacement”. This Guidance Note is being developed as part of the postdoctoral fellowship: Integrated intersectional and socioecological approach: Engaging with religion to strengthen protection from violence against women in forced displacement at the University of Birmingham.

The workshop’s objectives are to:

  1. Exchange and document good practices on faith sensitive VAWG programme designs.
  2. Brainstorm and document ideas on how to engage with informal female leaders, women’s faith organisations to address VAWG, and how to work with displaced survivors who are religious and with men and boys from faith communities?
  3. Produce specific recommendations on how to work with religious and cultural dynamics to address VAWG in forced displacement settings in order to inform the efforts of international and local organisations, governmental, inter-governmental and non-governmental agencies, and faith-based organisations that support displaced populations.

The workshop will be online and interactive. We expect around 20-25 participants from across regions. It will bring together community-based protection practitioners (GBV/VAWG and MHPSS) from multiple UN agencies, partner international organisations, NGOs, local partners and faith-based organisations and women’s groups and other relevant humanitarian actors. Facilitators of break out group discussions include Andres Martinez Garcia and Carolina Buendia Sarmiento (USIP’s Initiative on Religion and Psychosocial Support for Displaced Trauma Survivors) and Eleonora Mura (Arigatou International).
