Islamic Relief Worldwide

Islamic Relief Worldwide is an international relief and development charity which envisages a caring world where people unite to respond to the suffering of others, empowering them to fulfil their potential. IRW is an independent Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO). Islamic Relief provides support regardless of religion, ethnicity or gender and without expecting anything in return.

Islamic Relief Worldwide was established in 1984 by Dr Hany El-Banna and fellow students from the University of Birmingham in the UK in response to the famine in Africa. Launching an appeal, they went door to door and from mosque to mosque asking for money, and this paid for food for people affected by the famine.

Working in over 30 countries, they promote sustainable economic and social development by working with local communities to eradicate poverty, illiteracy and disease. They also respond to disasters and emergencies, helping people in crisis.

Mission: Exemplifying Islamic values, will mobilise resources, build partnerships, and develop local capacity, as they work to:

Enable communities to mitigate the effect of disasters, prepare for their occurrence and respond by providing relief, protection and recovery, Promote integrated development and environmental custodianship with a focus on sustainable livelihoods, Support the marginalised and vulnerable to voice their needs and address root causes of poverty.

IRW is a signatory of the Red Cross Code of Conduct,  has NGO status with the UN’s Economic and Social Council and has also signed a Framework Partnership with the European Commission Humanitarian Aid department, and a partnership agreement with UNHCR.

Jesuit Refugee Service

The mission of the Jesuit Refugee Service is to accompany, serve and advocate on behalf of refugees and other forcibly displaced persons.

JRS programmes are found in 51 countries, providing assistance to: refugees in camps and cities, individuals displaced within their own countries, asylum seekers in cities, and to those held in detention centres. The main areas of work are in the field of education, emergency assistance, healthcare, livelihood activities and social services. At the end of 2016, more than 733,400 individuals were direct beneficiaries of JRS projects.

Misean Cara

Misean Cara is an international and Irish faith-based missionary movement working with some of the most marginalised and vulnerable communities in developing countries. They work to realise human rights through delivery of basic services in the areas of education, health, livelihoods and income generation, as well as advocacy, networking and community mobilisation. Their movement is made up of 91 member organisations working in over 50 countries.

Mothers’ Union Uganda

Mothers’ Union works in 83 countries globally and it works through a network of 4 million members. Through the Central Secretariat, they continue to support members in their programmatic work and processes irrespective of conflict. They are now exploring creating a grassroots peace building network, as well as exploring supporting the learning from working in both development and relief work in conflict situations.

Mothers’ Union in Uganda has around 210,000 members throughout the country. Mothers’ Union has implemented the Eagle process, and when evaluation of the work took place at the end of 2015 to see impactful outcomes in the community & church mobilisation work.

Muslim Aid

Working in over 70 countries across Africa, Asia and Europe, Muslim Aid is striving to help the poor overcome the suffering endured due to natural disasters and lack of life’s basic necessities.

Muslim Aid works with all in need, regardless of their race, religion, gender, nationality or political opinion.

Whilst responding to emergencies is one of our major priorities, Muslim Aid also works on strategic programs to eliminate poverty that focus upon: Education, Skills training, Provision of clean water, Healthcare, and Income generation projects.

These projects ensure that individuals can have access to basic necessities and the skills necessary to generate an income so that they are not permanently dependent on aid agencies for food and shelter.
