About JLI

An international collaboration on evidence for faith actors’ activities, contributions, and challenges to achieving humanitarian and development goals. Founded in 2012, JLI came together with a single shared conviction: there is an urgent need to build our collective understanding, through evidence, of faith actors in humanitarianism and development.

The JLI community is deeply grateful for the life and legacy of Colonel Ian Swan, whose sudden passing has touched us all. Ian was a steadfast friend of JLI and a cherished member of our broader community. He gave generously of his time, wisdom, and encouragement, always engaging with sincerity and care.

Ian was known for his ability to listen genuinely, to bring humor and light with a mischievous sparkle in his eye, and to reflect the humanity of Jesus through his words and actions. He believed in collaboration, in lifting others up, and in building a world rooted in compassion and justice.

We celebrate Ian not with sorrow, but with gratitude—for the love he shared, the promises he fulfilled, and the inspiration he leaves behind. His support of JLI’s mission, and his commitment to a better world, will remain a guiding light for us.

Our thoughts and prayers are with his beloved wife Wendy, his family, and all who carry his memory with joy. We invite the JLI community to join us in celebrating Ian’s life by continuing the work to which he dedicated himself: listening deeply, loving generously, and serving the world with humility and hope.
