‘Working effectively with faith leaders to challenge harmful traditional practices’

Background

In 2017, the JLI Gender-based Violence Hub (GBV Hub) led a Department for International Development supported project ‘Working effectively with faith leaders to challenge harmful traditional practices (HTP)’.

Study activities:
  • Literature review focusing on the five most prevalent HTP and faith actors.
  • Selection of case studies for a multi-case study investigation conducted with international faith-based organizations working with faith leaders to address HTP.
  • Online survey to provide a more comprehensive scope of the knowledge gathered on HTP and FBOs role (65 total)
  • Study results first presented at Sexual Violence Research Institute in Rio September 2017 presented by Lisa le Roux and Brenda E. Bartelink
  • Study results accompanied with three briefs addressing most prominent themes (to be finalized by mid-Nov) will be presented at DFID on Nov 10

Study Team:

Veena O’Sullivan, the GBV Hub Secretariat, led the project with a research team with Elisabet le Roux, Selina Palm (Stellenbosch), Brenda Bartelink (University of Groningen), and Shereen El Feki, with support from JLI SGBV Hub co-chairs (Diana Arango, World Bank and Liz Dartnall, SVRI), GBV Hub Coordinator Natalia Lester-Bush and the JLI Knowledge Manager, Stacy Nam. Also, thanks to Hub members who filled out the survey or completed a case study.
