Theory of Change – A Theory of Change starts with the change in the world a faith group wants to see and works backward to lay out everything the faith group thinks will need to happen to bring it about (e.g., processes, activities, resources). It identifies the key players (including the organization, partners, public and private sectors) who will need to be involved, what each of those players will have to do, and clear assumptions on why they are likely to behave in the way you expect.
Vision for Impact – The transformative change a faith group wants to see in people’s lives and in communities, and the results which the faith group seeks. Example: People and their communities will be resilient and flourishing as evidenced by increased economic empowerment.
Unifying Framework for Measurement – An overarching explanation of how a faith group will measure and achieve the transformative impact it seeks; the anchoring and essential ingredients that will be common across the globe.
Outcomes – An enduring change achieved through a given programme. Outcomes can be short term or longer term. Short term example: Elderly people have enhanced relationships with the faith community and their peers through a weekly programme. Longer term example: There is a reduced incidence of loneliness and improved quality of life amongst elderly people in the community.
Evaluation – An assessment of a programme, typically conducted by some that is not part of your organization, to prove whether the programme works and is having impact.
Performance Measurement – The practice of collecting and using data to assess, learn and improve performance.
Measurement as Learning – The continuous tracking and analysis of programme data, typically through an internal system by the FBO’s own staff. Measurement as learning can support the following:
- Learning from experiences to improve practices and results;
- Self-assessment and greater local responsibility;
- Greater internal and external accountability of the resources used and the results obtained;
- The ability to make more informed decisions on the future of the programme.
